Cardiovascular disease in diabetes and operative risk
1Istituto di Cardiologia, Università Cattolica del S. Cuore, Policlinico A. Gemelli, Roma, Italy.
Insights
Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death in diabetes patients, significantly increasing mortality risk compared to non-diabetics. This shift highlights the critical impact of diabetes on heart health.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Endocrinology
- Public Health
Background:
- Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a major complication of diabetes mellitus.
- Historically, acute metabolic and infectious issues were primary causes of death in diabetics.
- Insulin therapy has shifted mortality causes towards CVD.
Purpose of the Study:
- To highlight the increased cardiovascular mortality in diabetic populations.
- To identify the primary cardiovascular complications in individuals with diabetes.
Main Methods:
- Analysis of mortality data, referencing findings from the Framingham study.
- Comparison of cardiovascular death rates between diabetic and non-diabetic populations.
Main Results:
- Adult diabetic populations exhibit a 17% annual incidence of cardiovascular death.
- This rate is significantly higher than in non-diabetic males (8.5%) and females (3.6%).
Conclusions:
- Cardiovascular complications are now the predominant cause of death in diabetes.
- Key clinical manifestations include myocardial ischemia, autonomic neuropathy, and cardiomyopathy.
Abstract:
Among the complications of diabetes, cardiovascular disease is one of the most frequent, severe and invalidating. In the era before the introduction of insulin treatment, the most frequent cause of death in diabetes were acute metabolic and infectious complications; at present, after the introduction of insulin therapy and the consequent major change in the clinical evolution of the disease, the most frequent cause of death is due to cardiovascular complications. From the Framingham study it is possible to observe that in the adult diabetic population, the annual incidence of death from cardiovascular causes is about 17%, both in men and women, as against 8.5% in non diabetic males and 3.6% in non diabetic females. Major clinical forms of cardiovascular disease in diabetics are myocardial ischemia, autonomic neuropathy and cardiomyopathy.
