Summary

Head and neck animal bites can be primarily repaired soon after injury, even in young patients. This study found no infections, suggesting further research into prophylactic antibiotics is needed.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the experience with surgical management of animal bites to the head and neck.

  • Retrospective review of medical records for 29 patients treated at a Houston teaching hospital over 18 months.
  • Analysis of patient demographics, injury characteristics, treatment protocols (primary repair, antibiotic use), and wound outcomes.

  • The majority of patients (76%) were 12 years old or younger.
  • Most wounds underwent primary repair shortly after injury with favorable outcomes and no infections.
  • Ninety percent received prophylactic antibiotics; the remaining 10% also healed well without infection.

  • Primary repair of head and neck animal bites is a viable option when performed promptly after injury.
  • The routine use of prophylactic antibiotics may not be necessary, warranting further investigation.
  • Prospective, randomized studies are recommended to definitively assess the role of prophylactic antibiotics.
