Summary

Engaging in moderate physical activity significantly lowers the risk of developing non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) in African-Americans. Public health initiatives promoting such activity are recommended for this population.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To characterize physical activity patterns in a working-class African-American community sample.

  • A community-based sample of 598 women and 318 men (ages 30-55) from North Carolina participated.
  • NIDDM status was determined by medication use and fasting blood glucose levels (FBG ≥ 140 mg/dl).

    • Lower, but not statistically significant, risk reductions were observed for low and strenuous activity levels.

    Conclusions:

    • Moderate physical activity demonstrates a strong association with decreased NIDDM risk in African-Americans.
    • Findings support the need for public health strategies to promote moderate leisure-time physical activity among black adults.
    • Further research is warranted to confirm these associations and inform intervention development.
