Summary

Pituitary stalk enlargement causing hypopituitarism, especially in children, can be reversible. Imaging revealed lesion regression and partial pituitary function recovery in four patients, a rare finding in pediatric cases.

Background:

  • Pituitary stalk enlargement is a rare condition associated with hypopituitarism.
  • The reversibility of this condition, particularly in children, is not well-documented.

Observation:

  • Four patients, three of whom were children, presented with diabetes insipidus and hypopituitarism.
  • Imaging revealed pituitary stalk enlargement in all patients.
  • Patients received hormone replacement therapy including desmopressin, thyroxine, hydrocortisone, and growth hormone.

Findings:

  • Radiological regression of the pituitary stalk lesion was observed in all patients during follow-up.
  • Spontaneous regression occurred in two cases.
  • Corticosteroid therapy or tuberculostatic drugs were administered in other cases, leading to lesion regression.

    • Pituitary stalk enlargement and associated hypopituitarism may be reversible, even in children.
