    Summary

    Subdural empyema can cause arterial irregularities, similar to meningitis. These vascular changes may resolve with treatment, even without meningitis.

    Background:

    • Subdural empyema is a serious intracranial infection.
    • Arterial vascular changes have been associated with meningitis.
    • The specific vascular effects of subdural empyema alone were not well-defined.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate arterial vascular changes in patients with subdural empyema.
    • To determine if subdural empyema alone can cause arterial irregularities.
    • To assess the response of these vascular changes to therapy.

    Main Methods:

    • Preoperative arteriography was performed on thirteen patients with subdural empyema.
    • Three patients were restudied postoperatively after treatment.
    • Arterial irregularities were analyzed for presence, type, and resolution.

    Main Results:

    • Nine out of thirteen patients showed arterial vascular changes, including localized or diffuse irregularities.
    • In two cases, these arterial changes resolved following effective therapy.
    • Seven cases demonstrated arterial changes without concurrent meningitis, indicating empyema as the cause.

    Conclusions:

    • Subdural empyema, independently of meningitis, can induce localized or diffuse arterial irregularities.
    • These vascular changes appear similar to those seen in meningitis.
    • Effective therapy may lead to the resolution of arterial irregularities caused by subdural empyema.
