Area of Science:

  • Dental Hygiene Education
  • Geriatric Oral Health
  • Curriculum Development

Background:

  • The aging population presents unique oral health challenges.
  • Effective geriatric dental care requires specialized education for dental hygienists.
  • Current educational standards for geriatric dental hygiene are not well-defined.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the current state of geriatric curricula in dental hygiene programs across the United States and Canada.
  • To identify the extent of didactic and clinical training in geriatrics.
  • To evaluate faculty and institutional perceptions of geriatric curriculum adequacy.

Main Methods:

  • A twenty-six-item survey was distributed to dental hygiene programs in the US and Canada.
  • Response rate was 82 percent.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Data analyzed included didactic/clinical hours, course integration, faculty involvement, and site of clinical experience.
  • Main Results:

    • Didactic requirements were present in 89% of programs, clinical in 54.2%.
    • Mean didactic hours were 10 (+/- 8.2), clinical 21.8 (+/- 27.5).
    • Only 18.8% offered specific geriatric courses; 49.5% felt their curriculum was suboptimal.

    Conclusions:

    • Geriatric dental hygiene education in the US and Canada may be insufficient to meet the needs of the growing elderly population.
    • Integration of geriatric content into existing courses is common, but dedicated courses are rare.
    • A significant portion of programs perceive their geriatric curriculum as inadequate.
