Background:

  • Reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD), now known as complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), is a chronic pain condition.

  • Skin biopsies from CRPS patients were analyzed using various immunostaining techniques.
  • S100 staining revealed an unexpected abundance of Langerhans cells in the epidermis.
  • All participating patients reported severe pain and treatment-resistant symptoms at the time of biopsy.

  • A significant increase in epidermal Langerhans cells was observed in CRPS patients.
  • Langerhans cells are antigen-presenting cells of the immune system.
