Betaxolol in anxiety disorders

Background:

• Previous beta-blocker research focused on agents with limited central nervous system penetration or short durations of action.

Purpose of the Study:

• To evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of betaxolol, a lipophilic beta-adrenergic blocker, in patients with persistent anxiety associated with anxiety disorders.
• To assess the impact of betaxolol on generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and panic disorder symptoms.

Main Methods:

• An open-label trial involving 31 patients (13 outpatients, 18 inpatients) diagnosed with GAD and/or adjustment disorder with anxiety.
• Dose titration of betaxolol until patient response or intolerance; severity rated on a 4-point global scale.
• Concurrent panic disorder was present in 5 outpatients and 16 inpatients.

Main Results:

• All patients with panic disorder experienced cessation of panic attacks within 2 days (p<0.001).
• Significant anxiety reduction was observed in 85% of outpatients (p<0.0001) and 100% of inpatients (p<0.0001), with most reaching only marginally ill status.

• Betaxolol demonstrated rapid and noticeable therapeutic effects in patients with various anxiety disorders, including those with longstanding conditions and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder.
• Preliminary findings suggest potential benefits in posttraumatic stress disorder as well.
• Betaxolol represents a promising therapeutic agent for managing persistent anxiety and associated symptoms.
