Objective:
To describe an additional case of malakoplakia of the prostate. The etiopathogenesis, the histological and clinical features of this disease are analyzed and the literature briefly reviewed.
Methods/Results:
The pathological features of malakoplakia of the prostate in an elderly man with severe prostatic syndrome and recurrent urinary infections from E. Coli are described. The clinical manifestations disappeared following adenomectomy according to the Millin technique.
Conclusion:
Diagnosis of malakoplakia of the prostate is based on the pathological findings. The importance of the pathologist's role in the diagnosis of this condition, which will determine the treatment to follow, is therefore underscored.
Insights
This case study details malakoplakia of the prostate, a rare condition. Surgical intervention led to the resolution of clinical manifestations, highlighting the importance of pathological diagnosis.
Area of Science:
- Urology
- Pathology
Background:
- Malakoplakia is a rare chronic inflammatory condition.
- Prostatic malakoplakia is exceptionally rare, with limited documented cases.
Observation:
- An elderly male presented with severe prostatic syndrome and recurrent Escherichia coli urinary infections.
- Pathological examination revealed features consistent with malakoplakia of the prostate.
Findings:
- The patient's clinical manifestations resolved completely after undergoing a Millin adenomectomy.
- Histopathological analysis is crucial for diagnosing prostatic malakoplakia.
Implications:
- Accurate pathological diagnosis is essential for guiding appropriate treatment strategies for prostatic malakoplakia.
- Surgical intervention, such as adenomectomy, may be an effective treatment for symptomatic prostatic malakoplakia.
