    Background:

    • Ureaplasmas are common inhabitants of the genital tract.
    • Their role in reproductive health, particularly in non-human primates, is not fully understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the prevalence of genital Ureaplasma infections in chimpanzees.
    • To assess the potential role of Ureaplasma in reproductive failure in chimpanzees.
    • To evaluate the chimpanzee as a model for human Ureaplasma genital infections.

    Main Methods:

    • Genital swabs were collected from male and female chimpanzees.
    • Samples were analyzed for the presence of Ureaplasma.
    • Surveys were conducted on other primate species to establish baseline Ureaplasma absence.

    • Ureaplasmas were detected in 18.4% of male and 34.8% of female chimpanzees.
