Summary

Olfactory dysfunction in Parkinson's disease (PD) is not linked to dopamine deficiency. Studies show no change in smell function after apomorphine (APO) treatment in PD patients, including those with hyposmia.

Background:

  • Olfactory dysfunction is a common non-motor symptom in Parkinson's disease (PD).
  • The dopaminergic system is implicated in PD, but its role in olfactory deficits remains unclear.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the dopaminergic basis of olfactory dysfunction in Parkinson's disease.
  • To determine if apomorphine (APO) administration can improve olfactory function in PD patients.

Main Methods:

  • 12 Parkinson's disease patients underwent olfactory threshold testing using amylacetate dilutions.
  • Olfactory function was assessed before and after apomorphine (APO) administration.
  • Subgroup analysis was performed on 7 patients with pre-existing hyposmia.
