Abstract
Background:
Gastroesophageal reflux is a common form of dyspepsia affecting 20-40% of the population.
Objective:
Adults experiencing gastroesophageal reflux represent a challenging subgroup of patients presenting to primary care physicians. Identification of those patients who require medical therapy and ultimately surgery, requires an understanding of the mechanisms of disease, the available diagnostic tools as well as the array of acid suppressive agents currently in use.
Discussion:
Successful therapy of gastroesophageal reflux may reduce complicated oesophageal and extraoesophageal disease.
