Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Developmental Psychology
  • Clinical Psychology

Background:

  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) significantly impacts children's behavior and performance.
  • Computerized cognitive-training systems offer potential interventions for neurodevelopmental disorders.

Observation:

  • The study involved 4 children (ages 7-11) with severe emotional disturbances and ADHD.
  • Intervention utilized Captain's Log, a computerized cognitive-training system, over 16 weeks (64 sessions).
  • Behavioral, electroencephalographic, and cognitive performance measures were assessed pre- and post-intervention.

Findings:

  • Children who showed greater success with the Captain's Log training exhibited enhanced generalization of targeted cognitive skills.
  • Improvements were measured via computer task progression, behavioral points, and pre/post assessment changes.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Computerized cognitive training may facilitate skill generalization in children with ADHD.
  • Tailoring training intensity to individual success could optimize outcomes for children with behavioral and attention challenges.
