Summary

A gold dental inlay lodged in the appendix passed spontaneously into the colon. This case suggests conservative management for similar blunt appendiceal foreign bodies under medical supervision.

Background:

  • Appendiceal foreign bodies are uncommon and can present diagnostic and management challenges.
  • Surgical intervention is often considered for appendiceal foreign bodies due to concerns about perforation and complications.

Observation:

  • A patient accidentally ingested a gold dental inlay, which became lodged in the appendix.
  • A conservative, nonsurgical approach was initially chosen due to the foreign body's blunt nature and low perforation risk.

Findings:

  • The appendiceal foreign body, a gold dental inlay, spontaneously passed into the colon after 20 days.
  • The patient remained asymptomatic throughout the 3-week observation period, with no complications reported.

Implications:

  • This case is the first to document the spontaneous passage of an appendiceal foreign body into the colon.
  • Conservative management with close medical supervision may be a viable option for patients with blunt foreign bodies in the appendix.
