Summary

Abnormal knee menisci, including the rare ring-shaped meniscus, are congenital conditions. This study describes a second case of a ring-shaped lateral meniscus, proposing it as a new variant for classification.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedics and Sports Medicine
  • Human Anatomy
  • Congenital Malformations

Background:

  • Discoid menisci are congenital abnormalities of the knee meniscus, with low incidence globally, except in Asian populations.
  • Current classification recognizes three types of lateral meniscal abnormalities: complete discoid, incomplete discoid, and Wrisberg-ligament type meniscus.

Observation:

  • This report details a rare case of a ring-shaped meniscus on the lateral side of the knee.
  • This observation represents the second documented instance of this specific meniscal variant.

Findings:

  • The study identifies and describes a ring-shaped meniscus, a previously unclassified lateral meniscal abnormality.
  • This finding suggests the need to expand the existing classification of lateral meniscal variants.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • The proposed inclusion of the ring-shaped meniscus as a fourth variant could refine diagnostic and treatment strategies.
  • This research contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of meniscal morphology and congenital knee abnormalities.
