Summary

Multiple myeloma (MM) patients have a higher incidence of secondary solid tumors than the general population. These co-existing or developing neoplasms require careful monitoring and management in MM care.

Background:

  • Multiple myeloma (MM) is a hematological malignancy.
  • The occurrence of secondary non-hematological neoplasms (solid tumors) in MM patients is not well-documented.
  • Understanding the frequency and types of these secondary neoplasms is crucial for patient management.

Observation:

  • This study documented six patients with multiple myeloma and a second solid tumor.
  • Secondary neoplasms included adenocarcinoma of the colon, lung cancer, adenocarcinoma of the urinary bladder, and hepatoma.
  • These secondary tumors either preceded, co-existed with, or developed during the course of MM.

Findings:

  • Two patients with a history of colon adenocarcinoma responded to MM therapy.
  • One patient with bladder carcinoma also responded to MM therapy.
