    Summary

    Striated membranous structures (SMS) were identified in the extracellular locations of heart tissues in patients with valvular prolapse and congenital heart disease. These structures may originate from basement membrane components like Type IV collagen.

    Background:

    • Striated membranous structures (SMS) have been previously observed in renal and ocular tissues.
    • The presence and significance of SMS in cardiac tissues remain less understood.

    Observation:

    • SMS were identified in the mitral and tricuspid valves of patients with mitral valvular prolapse.
    • These structures were also found in the mitral valve and femoral artery of a patient with Marfan's syndrome and prolapsed mitral valve.
    • SMS were present in the myocardium and thickened endocardium of patients with congenital heart disease and right ventricular outflow obstruction.

    Findings:

    • The identified SMS varied in thickness (130-220 Å) and exhibited periodic substructure.
    • A majority of SMS showed thicknesses around 200 Å with distinct light and dark bands (100-160 Å periodicity).
