Abstract:
A Meckel's diverticulum may result in a number of complications including hemorrhage, obstruction, and inflammation. We report a case of a gangrenous Meckel's diverticulum secondary to axial torsion, which has been reported only four times in adults and once in children in the past 28 years.
Insights
A rare case of gangrenous Meckel's diverticulum caused by axial torsion is presented. This serious complication, involving bowel tissue death, is exceptionally uncommon in both adults and children.
Area of Science:
- Gastroenterology
- Surgical Pathology
Background:
- Meckel's diverticulum is a congenital anomaly of the small intestine.
- Complications include hemorrhage, obstruction, and inflammation.
Observation:
- A rare case of a gangrenous Meckel's diverticulum secondary to axial torsion was observed.
- This specific complication is exceedingly rare, with only five reported instances in pediatric and adult patients over 28 years.
Findings:
- Axial torsion of Meckel's diverticulum can lead to gangrene and necessitate surgical intervention.
- The rarity of this presentation highlights diagnostic and management challenges.
Implications:
- Increased awareness of rare Meckel's diverticulum complications is crucial for timely diagnosis.
- Understanding the pathophysiology of axial torsion can inform surgical strategies for similar rare cases.
