    Summary

    During saccadic eye movements, the brain processes minimal visual information. This study shows that detailed perception of the environment is not possible during these rapid eye movements.

    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the extent of visual perception during saccadic eye movements.
    • To determine if environmental details can be discerned during saccades.

    • Subjects performed horizontal saccadic eye movements.
    • Visual stimuli were projected onto a screen centered on primary gaze.
    • Stimulus properties and illumination were manipulated to optimize pattern recognition.

    • Little to no detail of projected images was perceived under any condition.
    • Only horizontal laminations were perceived as colored blurs.
    • Pattern recognition was severely limited during saccades.

    Conclusions:

    • There is no useful perception of the everyday environment during saccades.
    • Visual processing during saccades is insufficient for detailed image recognition.
