Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Psychiatry
  • Psychology

Background:

  • Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is increasingly recognized as a persistent condition into adulthood.
  • Neuropsychological features of adult ADHD remain under-investigated.
  • Executive function deficits are a key area of inquiry for adult ADHD.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the neuropsychological functioning of adults diagnosed with ADHD.
  • To utilize a comprehensive battery of executive function tests for assessment.
  • To compare performance between adults with and without ADHD.

Main Methods:

  • Study included 64 unmedicated adults (19-59 years) with childhood-onset ADHD and 73 age/gender-matched controls.
  • Participants met DSM-III-R criteria for ADHD in childhood and adulthood.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Neuropsychological performance was assessed blindly to clinical status.
  • Main Results:

    • Adults with ADHD exhibited significant deficits in vigilance, verbal memory semantic encoding, and written arithmetic compared to controls.
    • These impairments were consistent across varying ages, genders, and comorbidities.
    • Adults with ADHD showed a trend towards lower occupational attainment and more academic difficulties, despite similar IQ and education.

    Conclusions:

    • The study identified specific executive, attention, and achievement deficits in adults with ADHD.
    • These dysfunctions provide empirical support for the validity of adult ADHD.
    • Findings highlight the impact of ADHD on adult functioning and academic/occupational outcomes.
