Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is common in primary headache patients. Eradicating H. pylori significantly reduced headache frequency, intensity, and duration in many individuals.

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Gastroenterology
  • Vascular Medicine

Background:

  • Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is increasingly linked to vascular disorders.
  • Primary headache disorders often involve vascular alterations, suggesting a potential connection to H. pylori.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between H. pylori infection and primary headache.
  • To evaluate the impact of H. pylori eradication on headache characteristics.

Main Methods:

  • 200 primary headache patients were assessed for H. pylori infection using the 13C urea breath test.
  • Headache types included tension-type, cluster, and migraine (with or without aura).
  • Gastrointestinal symptoms were evaluated; H. pylori eradication was assessed in a subset of infected patients.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • H. pylori infection was present in 40% of primary headache patients.
  • Migraine without aura was significantly more prevalent in H. pylori-infected individuals.
  • Following eradication in 30 patients, 17% experienced complete headache resolution, and 69% reported reduced intensity, duration, and frequency.

Conclusions:

  • H. pylori infection is a common comorbidity in patients with primary headache.
  • Bacterial eradication demonstrated a significant positive effect on reducing headache attack severity and occurrence.
