Background:

Understanding semantic priming is crucial for deciphering how the brain processes word meanings.
Previous research suggests hemispheric differences in processing literal versus figurative language.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate hemispheric differences in semantic priming for literal and metaphoric word associations.
To examine the influence of stimulus-onset-asynchrony (SOA) on visual field processing of semantic targets.

Main Methods:

Presented literal (stinging-mosquito) and metaphoric (stinging-insult) word pairs.
Utilized left visual field (LVF) and right visual field (RVF) presentation.
Employed stimulus-onset-asynchronies (SOA) of 200 ms and 800 ms.

Main Results:

Short SOA (200 ms): Metaphoric targets facilitated in both VFs; literal targets facilitated only in RVF.
Long SOA (800 ms): Metaphoric targets facilitated in LVF; literal targets facilitated in RVF.
Evidence for enhanced right hemisphere (RH) role in metaphoric comprehension.

Conclusions:

Results support the hypothesis of RH dominance in metaphor processing.
Findings align with models of hemispheric semantic processing, differentiating literal and figurative language.
Visual field and SOA effects highlight distinct neural pathways for semantic access.
