Nonrebreathing valve for spontaneously breathing or mechanically ventilated animals

The design of a small dead space, nonbreathing valve suitable for use in small laboratory animals is presented. The design overcomes previous problems of condensation occurring at valve leaflets, and allows ongoing collection of expired gases should the animal require mechanical ventilation. The valve apparatus performs reliably when in operation for several hours at a time with a variety of small animals.
