Summary

Dopamine stimulation significantly improved unilateral neglect symptoms in patients. This suggests dopamine pathways are crucial for both the perception and motor aspects of neglect.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Neurology

Background:

  • Unilateral neglect syndrome is a debilitating neurological condition.
  • The role of dopaminergic circuits in neglect's premotor components is hypothesized.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of acute dopaminergic stimulation on unilateral neglect.
  • To test the hypothesis that dopamine influences premotor neglect.

Main Methods:

  • Four patients with left neglect were studied.
  • Apomorphine (dopaminergic stimulant) and placebo were administered subcutaneously.
  • Performance on circle crossing and target exploration tasks (perceptual and perceptual-motor) was assessed.

Main Results:

  • Dopaminergic stimulation led to significant improvements in both tasks compared to placebo and baseline.
  • Three patients showed greater improvement in perceptual-motor (pointing) than perceptual (counting) tasks.

Conclusions:

  • Dopaminergic neuronal networks appear to mediate both perceptive and premotor aspects of unilateral neglect.
  • Findings support the involvement of dopamine in the complex mechanisms underlying neglect syndrome.
