    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine the incidence and histological characteristics of melanocytic nevi in a newborn infant population.
    • To assess the potential for malignancy in congenital melanocytic nevi.

    Main Methods:

    • Clinical examination of 1058 newborn infants for pigmented lesions.
    • Biopsy and histopathological examination of clinically suspected melanocytic nevi.

    • Clinically discernible pigmented lesions were found in 3.9% of infants.
    • Melanocytic nevi were histopathologically confirmed in 1.01% of newborns.

    • Histological examination is crucial for accurate diagnosis, as clinical differentiation can be difficult.
