Area of Science:

  • Anesthesiology
  • Gastroenterology
  • Clinical Pharmacy

Background:

  • Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is a common complication following anesthesia and surgery.
  • Understanding the incidence and predisposing factors of PONV in specific populations is crucial for effective management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To estimate the incidence and identify predisposing factors of PONV in Nigerian patients.
  • To evaluate the occurrence of nausea and vomiting within the first 24 hours after anesthesia and surgery.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective review of 7714 patient charts followed by a prospective study of 200 adult Nigerian patients.
  • Data collected included patient demographics, anesthetic agents, and occurrence of nausea and vomiting.

Main Results:

  • Retrospective review showed a vomiting incidence of 0.79%.
  • Prospective study revealed 41.6% incidence of nausea and 19.6% of vomiting within 24 hours.
  • Women experienced significantly more emetic symptoms than men (p < 0.05); preoperative pethidine and morphine were associated with PONV.

Conclusions:

  • Nigerian women are at higher risk for PONV.
  • Prophylactic anti-emetic therapy should be considered for Nigerian women, especially when narcotic analgesics are used.
