Background:

  • Infantile hemangiomas are common vascular tumors in infants.
  • High-dose corticosteroids are the standard treatment but are ineffective in one-third of cases.
  • Alternative therapies are needed for corticosteroid-resistant infantile hemangiomas.

Observation:

  • Seven infants with corticosteroid-resistant infantile hemangiomas were treated with interferon (INF) alpha-2b.
  • Hemangiomas were primarily located on the head and neck.
  • The mean age of treatment initiation was 7.5 months, with a mean treatment duration of 5 months.

Findings:

  • Two cases of facial hemangiomas showed dramatic improvement with INF alpha-2b.
  • One case stabilized, while three cases showed no improvement.

  • One patient experienced hepatitis, necessitating treatment cessation; no long-term side effects were observed during a mean follow-up of 27 months.
