Summary

Matching extinction procedures to the function of target behaviors effectively suppressed them. Irrelevant procedures, however, showed no beneficial effects, highlighting the importance of functional matching in behavior modification.

Area of Science:

  • Behavioral science
  • Applied behavior analysis
  • Functional behavior assessment

Background:

  • Extinction is a procedure used to decrease problem behavior.
  • The effectiveness of extinction depends on matching the procedure to the behavior's function.
  • Previous research supports the need for functional matching.

Observation:

  • Two target behaviors in an individual were analyzed.
  • Specific extinction procedures were applied, matched to each behavior's function.
  • One behavior was also exposed to an irrelevant extinction procedure.

Findings:

  • The extinction procedure matched to a behavior's function successfully suppressed that behavior.
  • The irrelevant extinction procedure did not produce any beneficial effects.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Results confirm that functional matching is critical for effective extinction.
  • Implications:

    • Behavior analysts should always match extinction procedures to the specific function of problem behavior.
    • This approach enhances the efficiency and effectiveness of behavior intervention plans.
    • Understanding behavior function is key to successful treatment outcomes.
