GM-CSF, IL-5 and RANTES immunoreactivity and mRNA expression in chronic hyperplastic sinusitis with nasal polyposis

Eosinophils, GM-CSF, IL-5, and RANTES are elevated in both allergic and non-allergic chronic hyperplastic sinusitis with nasal polyposis (CHS/NP). Non-allergic CHS/NP is distinguished by fewer T lymphocytes and more IL-5+ eosinophils, suggesting different inflammatory pathways.

- GM-CSF, IL-5, and RANTES are upregulated in both allergic and non-allergic NP.
- Non-allergic NP is characterized by fewer CD3 T lymphocytes and IL-5+/CD3+ T lymphocytes, but more IL-5+ eosinophils.
- These distinctions suggest divergent mechanisms of eosinophil involvement in allergic versus non-allergic NP.
