Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging can help diagnose nonossifying fibromas by showing hypointensity and septation on T2-weighted images. Imaging findings correlate with pathologic features like fibrous tissue and hemosiderin.

Area of Science:

  • Radiology
  • Orthopedic Imaging
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Nonossifying fibroma is a common benign bone tumor.
  • Accurate diagnosis is crucial for appropriate management.
  • Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging offers detailed soft tissue contrast.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To correlate nonossifying fibroma findings on MR imaging with pathologic examination.
  • To identify characteristic MR imaging features of nonossifying fibroma.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of MR images from 19 patients with pathologically confirmed nonossifying fibroma.
  • Evaluation of signal intensity on T1- and T2-weighted images and contrast enhancement patterns.
  • Correlation of MR findings with biopsy results.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Nonossifying fibromas exhibited low signal intensity on T1-weighted images.
  • Most lesions were hypointense (79%) on T2-weighted images, with some being hyperintense (21%).
  • Intense contrast enhancement was observed in 15 lesions, with heterogeneous patterns in most.

Conclusions:

  • Hypointensity and septation on T2-weighted MR images are distinguishing features of nonossifying fibroma.
  • MR signal intensity and enhancement patterns depend on histologic components such as fibrous tissue, hemosiderin, and collagen.
