Summary

Family practice residents experience significantly fewer night calls today compared to 1981 and 1989. Further evaluation is needed to understand the educational impact of this trend in residency programs.

Background:

Night call is a traditional component of medical residency training.
Both service provision and educational value are attributed to night call duties.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate trends in night call frequency within family practice residency programs.
To test the hypothesis that night call frequency has decreased between 1981 and 1997.

Main Methods:

A longitudinal review of the Directory of Family Practice Residency Programs for 1981, 1989, and 1997.
Data on in-house and home call frequency were aggregated to calculate total annual calls per resident.

Main Results:

Mean total night calls for PGY-1 residents decreased from 190 (1981) to 104 (1997).
Mean total night calls for PGY-2 residents decreased from 160 (1981) to 74 (1997).
Mean total night calls for PGY-3 residents decreased from 151 (1981) to 57 (1997).

Conclusions:

Family practice residents currently undertake fewer night calls than in previous decades.
The educational implications of reduced night call frequency require thorough assessment.
