Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Wound Healing
  • Phytomedicine

Background:

  • Chronic venous leg ulcers represent a significant clinical challenge.
  • Current treatment modalities for venous leg ulcers have limitations.
  • Aloe vera is a plant with a long history of medicinal use.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the potential efficacy of aloe vera preparations in promoting the healing of chronic venous leg ulcers.
  • To synthesize current evidence on aloe vera's role as a complementary treatment for venous leg ulcers.

Main Methods:

  • Review of recent studies investigating topical and oral aloe vera administration.
  • Analysis of reported outcomes related to ulcer healing rates and patient recovery.

Main Results:

  • Preliminary findings indicate that aloe vera preparations may support the healing process of chronic venous leg ulcers.
  • Both topical and oral administration routes showed potential benefits in some studies.

Conclusions:

  • Aloe vera shows promise as an adjunctive therapy for chronic venous leg ulcers.
  • Further large-scale clinical trials are necessary to confirm these findings and establish definitive treatment guidelines.
  • Generalization of current results should be approached with caution due to limited robust evidence.
