The role and experiences of spouses in the medical profession are under-researched.
Understanding the sociological impact on doctors' wives provides insight into family dynamics within healthcare.
Purpose of the Study:
To sociologically survey the experiences of doctors' wives.
To explore their educational backgrounds, pre-marital employment, current employment status, and professional involvement with their husbands' careers.
Main Methods:
A sociological survey was conducted.
The study included 52 participants who were wives of doctors.
Main Results:
The majority of participants attended private school.
19% had tertiary education; 58% previously worked in healthcare (42% in nursing).
Currently, 10% were in full-time external employment, with most assisting their husbands professionally. A minority reported a loss of personal identity.
Conclusions:
Doctors' wives often have significant healthcare backgrounds and contribute to their husbands' careers.
While many find fulfillment in supporting their spouse's profession, some experience a diminished sense of personal identity.
