Sinusoidal hemangioma (SH) is a rare vascular lesion. This study describes four cases with aggressive local growth, distinct from typical SH presentations.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Pathology
  • Vascular Biology

Background:

  • Sinusoidal hemangioma (SH) is an uncommon cutaneous vascular lesion described in 1991.
  • It is characterized by dilated, interconnecting, thin-walled channels with a lobular architecture.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review and compare clinical, radiological, evolutive, and histological data of four patients with lesions resembling SH.
  • To establish the clinicopathologic entity of these lesions and differentiate them from other vascular malformations.

Main Methods:

  • Review of clinical, radiological (CT, MRI, arteriography), and histological data from four patients.
  • Comparison of findings with established descriptions of Sinusoidal Hemangioma.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Four patients (2 male, 2 female) presented with lesions having infantile onset, protracted course, and invasion of forehead, eyelids, and orbit.
  • Clinically, lesions appeared as multilobulated tumors under normal skin; radiologically, they showed nodular patterns with slow-flow characteristics.
  • Histologically, well-circumscribed nodules with dilated, sinusoidal vascular channels were observed, with spindle cell islands in two cases.

Conclusions:

  • The histological features align with Sinusoidal Hemangioma (SH), distinguishing it from infantile hemangiomas and venous/lymphatic malformations.
  • These cases represent a distinct clinicopathologic entity with aggressive local growth, differing from the typical adult presentation of SH.
  • The presence of spindle cells warrants discussion regarding differentiation from spindle cell hemangioendothelioma.
