Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Orthopedic Surgery

Background:

  • Peroneal and tibial neuropathies are known complications of total knee arthroplasty (TKA).
  • Literature review revealed no prior reports of sacral plexopathy or sciatic neuropathy post-TKA.

Observation:

  • A patient presented with neurological deficits after undergoing bilateral TKA.
  • Diagnostic evaluation indicated a right sacral plexopathy and a left sciatic neuropathy.

Findings:

  • The patient's symptoms were attributed to sacral plexopathy and sciatic neuropathy.
  • These nerve injuries were identified as potential, albeit rare, complications following bilateral TKA.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the possibility of sacral plexopathy and sciatic neuropathy as rare complications of TKA.
