Summary

Partial splenic decapsulation is a safe and effective treatment for splenic cysts in children. Percutaneous drainage alone has limited value and may delay necessary surgery.

Background:

  • Splenic cysts, including pseudocysts and congenital epidermoid cysts, can occur in children.
  • Management options for splenic cysts include observation, percutaneous drainage, and surgical intervention.

Observation:

  • Two pediatric patients with splenic cysts underwent ultrasound-guided percutaneous needle aspiration with drainage.
  • Both patients experienced rapid reaccumulation of cyst fluid following percutaneous drainage.

Findings:

  • Percutaneous drainage alone demonstrated limited therapeutic value for splenic cysts in this cohort.
  • Partial splenic decapsulation was found to be a simple and safe procedure for managing splenic cysts.

Implications:
