Area of Science:

  • Colorectal Surgery
  • Surgical Indications
  • Gastrointestinal Procedures

Background:

  • Colostomies are critical surgical interventions for various lower gastrointestinal conditions.
  • Understanding the indications and outcomes is vital for improving patient care.
  • The University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) has performed numerous colostomies over time.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze the indications for colostomies performed at UPTH between 1986 and 1992.
  • To classify the reasons for colostomy, including congenital, traumatic, neoplastic, and miscellaneous causes.
  • To highlight challenges and outcomes associated with colostomy procedures in this period.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 36 colostomies performed over a 7-year period (January 1986 - December 1992).
  • Classification of indications into congenital, traumatic, neoplastic, and miscellaneous groups.
  • Documentation of colostomy types (loop transverse, defunctioning transverse, permanent terminal).

Main Results:

  • Congenital conditions (imperforate anus, Hirschsprung's disease) were the most frequent indications (19 cases).
  • Traumatic conditions accounted for 9 cases, and rectal carcinoma for 5 cases.
  • Miscellaneous indications included sigmoid volvulus (2 cases) and stercoral perforation (1 case).

Conclusions:

  • Congenital anomalies represent a primary driver for colostomy in this patient cohort.
  • Colostomy remains a necessary procedure for managing complex colorectal pathologies, including trauma and malignancy.
  • Further analysis of specific challenges and long-term outcomes is warranted.
