Tardive blepharospasm (TB) is an uncommon but disabling movement disorder. Reducing or stopping neuroleptic medication can significantly improve TB symptoms.

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Movement Disorders

Background:

  • Tardive dystonia is a movement disorder associated with neuroleptic medication.
  • Tardive blepharospasm (TB) is a less common manifestation.

Observation:

  • Five cases of TB were identified among 25 patients with tardive dystonia.
  • Patients were aged 25-50, predominantly male, with some having schizophrenia.
  • Onset occurred during neuroleptic maintenance or withdrawal, with gradual progression.

Findings:

  • Symptoms were bilateral but asymmetric, with persistent dyskinetic blinking.
  • Associated symptoms included orolingual dyskinesia and tardive akathisia.
  • Neuroleptic dose reduction improved symptoms, with complete resolution in one patient withdrawn from medication.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • TB, though rare, can be disabling.
  • Cessation or dose reduction of neuroleptics may lead to significant improvement.
  • Further research into TB's treatment and long-term course is warranted.
