Brain abscess and necrotic or cystic brain tumor: discrimination with signal intensity on diffusion-weighted MR
1Department of Radiology, Seoul National University College of Medicine and Institute of Radiation Medicine, South Korea.
Objective:
The purpose of this study was to determine the differences in signal intensity between brain abscesses and necrotic or cystic tumors on diffusion-weighted MR imaging.
Conclusion:
Five consecutive patients with proven brain abscesses and four patients with proven cystic or necrotic brain tumors were prospectively evaluated with diffusion-weighted imaging. On diffusion-weighted imaging, brain abscesses showed markedly hyperintense signal in all five patients, whereas necrotic or cystic brain tumors revealed hypointense signal in all four patients. Diffusion-weighted imaging may allow the differentiation of brain abscess from necrotic or cystic brain tumor.
Insights
Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) can differentiate brain abscesses from necrotic or cystic tumors. Abscesses appear hyperintense, while tumors show hypointense signals on DWI, aiding in diagnosis.
Area of Science:
- Radiology
- Neurology
- Medical Imaging
Background:
- Distinguishing brain abscesses from necrotic or cystic tumors is crucial for appropriate patient management.
- Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) is a sensitive MRI technique that provides information about water molecule diffusion.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the signal intensity differences of brain abscesses and necrotic or cystic tumors on diffusion-weighted MR imaging.
- To evaluate the utility of DWI in differentiating these two pathologies.
Main Methods:
- Prospective evaluation of five patients with brain abscesses and four patients with cystic or necrotic brain tumors.
- Acquisition of diffusion-weighted MR images for all participants.
Main Results:
- Brain abscesses consistently demonstrated markedly hyperintense signals on DWI.
- Necrotic or cystic brain tumors uniformly exhibited hypointense signals on DWI.
Conclusions:
- Diffusion-weighted imaging effectively differentiates brain abscesses from necrotic or cystic brain tumors based on signal intensity.
- DWI is a valuable tool for improving diagnostic accuracy in neuroimaging.
