Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the spatial relationship between alcohol availability and high-risk sexual behavior.
  • To assess this link at the neighborhood (census tract) level.

Main Methods:

  • Ecological analysis of gonorrhea rates and alcohol outlet density (off-premise, on-premise, total).
  • Study conducted in 155 urban census tracts in New Orleans, 1995.

Main Results:

  • All measures of alcohol outlet density positively correlated with gonorrhea rates.
  • Off-premise outlets showed the strongest association, explaining 29% of the variance.
  • A 10% increase in off-premise outlets correlated with a 5.8% increase in gonorrhea rates, even after controlling for demographic factors.

Conclusions:

  • A significant geographic correlation exists between alcohol outlet density and gonorrhea rates at the census tract level.
  • While not causal, findings support public health interventions.
  • Further research is warranted to understand the alcohol availability and high-risk sexual behavior relationship.
