Summary

Mapping nursing terminologies revealed commonalities and unique concepts across the North American Nursing Diagnosis Association (NANDA), Home Health Care Classification (HHCC), and Omaha System. A single unified nursing language is not feasible, but these findings aid in developing one.

Area of Science:

  • Nursing Informatics
  • Health Terminology Standards
  • Clinical Data Management

Background:

  • Continuity of care is hindered by the need to re-state problems and interventions when different nursing nomenclatures are used.
  • Standardizing nursing language is crucial for seamless data exchange and improved patient care.
  • Three major nursing nomenclatures exist: NANDA, HHCC, and Omaha System.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To map problem and diagnosis terms across three major nursing nomenclatures.
  • To identify commonalities and differences between the North American Nursing Diagnosis Association (NANDA) Approved List, Home Health Care Classification (HHCC), and Omaha System.
  • To assess the feasibility of creating a single, unified nursing vocabulary.

Main Methods:

  • A descriptive analysis of 396 terms from NANDA, HHCC, and the Omaha System.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Terms were mapped between each nomenclature using consensus methods.
  • Validation included reverse mapping, syllogisms, taxonomic groupings, and expert review.
  • Main Results:

    • 63 terms (21 concepts) were found to be the same or similar across all three nomenclatures.
    • 91 terms were unique to their original nomenclature.
    • 242 terms showed broader or narrower relationships between nomenclatures, highlighting inconsistencies in abstraction and taxonomy.

    Conclusions:

    • A single master list of preferred nursing terms is not feasible due to structural differences and incompatible taxonomies.
    • The developed mappings highlight commonalities and unique contributions, facilitating the creation of a uniform nursing language.
    • These mappings can support automatic translation of nursing diagnoses between systems using different nomenclatures.
