Summary

Totally extraperitoneal approach (TEPA) hernia repair may cause adhesions. Peritoneal dissection in this laparoscopic technique, unlike previously thought, can lead to scar formation and intra-abdominal adhesions in rats.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if peritoneal dissection during TEPA causes intra-abdominal adhesions.
  • To test the hypothesis that TEPA may not completely avoid adhesion risks.

  • 88 male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into two groups.
  • One group underwent laparotomy with peritoneal dissection; the control group did not.
  • Animals were re-explored after 14 days to assess for adhesions.
