Summary

Delayed CT scans reveal increased and more uniform contrast enhancement in pleomorphic adenomas of the parotid gland. This finding aids in distinguishing these tumors from other parotid abnormalities for better lesion conspicuity.

Background:

  • Pleomorphic adenomas of the parotid gland may show weak or absent CT enhancement immediately after contrast administration.
  • This initial poor conspicuity can hinder differentiation from normal tissue and other parotid abnormalities.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To document delayed CT enhancement characteristics of parotid pleomorphic adenomas.
  • To compare these delayed enhancement patterns with those of other parotid tumors.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of preoperative CT scans from 18 pathologically proven parotid neoplasms.
  • Inclusion of pleomorphic adenomas, Warthin's tumors, squamous cell carcinomas, mucoepidermoid cancers, acinic cell carcinoma, and melanoma metastasis.
  • Axial CT post-contrast followed by delayed coronal CT (average 24 minutes); normalized Hounsfield unit (HU) attenuation calculated.
