  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Context:

  • Thyroidectomy is a common surgical procedure.
  • Hyperthyroidism affects 13.9% of patients undergoing thyroidectomy.
  • Graves disease is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism in this cohort.

Purpose:

  • To determine the incidence of thyroid carcinoma in patients with hyperthyroidism.
  • To investigate the association between hyperthyroidism and thyroid malignancy.
  • To evaluate the risk factors for thyroid cancer in hyperthyroid patients.

Summary:

  • Histopathologic evaluation revealed papillary thyroid carcinoma in 2.3% of hyperthyroid patients and 4.1% of Graves disease patients.
  • Patients with hyperthyroidism and concurrent goiter are at increased risk for thyroid carcinoma.
