Area of Science:

  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Physiological Monitoring

Background:

  • Manometric systems are known to introduce dynamic distortion.
  • Existing methods to quantify this distortion can be complex.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop a simpler and more accurate technique to assess the dynamic accuracy of pressure monitoring systems.
  • Introduce the Gabarith as a novel method for evaluating monitoring chain performance.

Main Methods:

  • Characterized pressure monitoring systems by their transfer function, which describes waveform transformation.
  • Developed the Gabarith as a tolerance envelope based on typical pressure waveform frequency content.
  • Defined 'Gabarith tested' as a system whose frequency response falls within this tolerance band.

Main Results:

  • The Gabarith simplifies the communication of dynamic response to users.
  • Monitoring chains falling within the Gabarith tolerance envelope provide adequate dynamic accuracy.
  • Passing the Gabarith test ensures a specific level of accuracy for the tested system.

Conclusions:

  • The Gabarith provides a straightforward yet accurate assessment of dynamic accuracy in pressure monitoring.
  • It allows users to easily determine if their monitoring setup meets required accuracy standards.
  • This technique enhances the reliability of pressure waveform measurements in clinical settings.
