Summary

This study found no link between immunoglobulin (Ig) G subclass deficiency and infant wheezing. However, higher IgG4 subclass levels were associated with recurrent wheezing in infants.

Background:

  • Wheezing in infants presents diagnostic challenges.
  • The role of immunoglobulin (Ig) G subclass deficiency in infant wheezing remains debated.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence of IgG subclass deficiency in wheezing infants.
  • To determine the association between IgG subclass levels and wheezing episodes in infants.

Main Methods:

  • Serum IgG subclass concentrations were measured in 38 wheezing infants (6-24 months) and 30 healthy controls.
  • Patients had not received systemic steroids prior to the study.

Main Results:

  • No significant difference in IgG subclass deficiency prevalence was found between wheezing infants and controls.
  • While IgG1, IgG2, and IgG3 levels did not differ, wheezing infants showed significantly higher IgG4 concentrations (P < 0.01).
  • A trend, though not statistically significant, linked more frequent wheezing episodes to higher IgG subclass deficiency rates.

Conclusions:

  • Infant wheezing is not associated with immunoglobulin (Ig) G subclass deficiency.
  • Low IgG subclass levels do not appear to increase wheezing frequency.
  • A significant relationship exists between recurrent wheezing and elevated serum IgG4 subclass concentrations.
