Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Selective serotonin agonists have revolutionized acute migraine treatment.
  • Sumatriptan was introduced in Belgium in 1992, followed by other triptans.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the efficacy and pharmacoeconomic profile of zolmitriptan.
  • To announce the arrival of naratriptan in the Belgian market.

Main Methods:

  • Review of existing literature on zolmitriptan.
  • Analysis of pharmacoeconomic data for zolmitriptan.

Main Results:

  • Zolmitriptan is the second triptan available in Belgium.
  • Efficacy and pharmacoeconomic data for zolmitriptan are presented.
  • Naratriptan is announced as a new emerging triptan.

Conclusions:

  • Zolmitriptan offers a valuable therapeutic option for acute migraine.
  • The emergence of new triptans like naratriptan expands treatment choices.
