  • To assess the degree to which prehospital patient care protocols reflect findings from peer-reviewed emergency medical services (EMS) literature.
  • To identify any variations in protocol consistency based on EMS system affiliations.

  • A literature search identified 49 relevant research articles from eight institutions.
  • These articles were compared against 12 sets of prehospital care protocols.
  • Comparisons were categorized as consistent, partially consistent, not discussed, or not consistent.
