Summary

Non-use of Ca(2+)-channel blockers, peripapillary atrophy, and disc hemorrhage are linked to faster visual field loss in normal-tension glaucoma (NTG). Systemic Ca(2+)-channel blocker use may improve visual field prognosis.

Background:

  • Normal-tension glaucoma (NTG) is characterized by optic nerve damage and visual field loss without elevated intraocular pressure (IOP).
  • Understanding factors influencing visual field damage progression in NTG is crucial for patient management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate intraocular and systemic factors associated with the progression of visual field damage in normal-tension glaucoma (NTG).
  • To identify non-IOP-related risk factors for visual field loss progression in NTG.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective study of 47 NTG eyes with a minimum 5-year follow-up.
  • Stepwise regression analysis correlated visual field damage progression (mean deviation change per year) with clinical factors.
  • Evaluated factors included age, disc hemorrhage, initial and mean IOP, peak IOP, IOP fluctuation, peripapillary atrophy, and Ca(2+)-channel blocker use.
