Validity study of the EDI-2 in Israeli population
1Counseling and Psychological Service, Stanford University, California, USA. noganiv@hotmail.com
This study validated the Eating Disorder Inventory-2 (EDI-2) in Israeli adults. Results show the EDI-2 is a reliable and valid measure for assessing eating disorder symptoms in this population.
Area of Science:
- Psychological assessment
- Clinical psychology
- Eating disorder research
Background:
- The Eating Disorder Inventory-2 (EDI-2) is a widely used measure for assessing psychopathology related to eating disorders.
- Validation of the EDI-2 in diverse cultural and linguistic contexts is crucial for its accurate application.
- Previous research has established the reliability and validity of the EDI-2 in various populations.
Purpose of the Study:
- To validate the Hebrew translation of the Eating Disorder Inventory-2 (EDI-2) in an Israeli population.
- To assess the reliability and validity of the EDI-2 for differentiating between anorectic patients, recovering anorectics, and healthy controls.
- To examine the EDI-2 scale scores in relation to eating disorder status within the Israeli context.
Main Methods:
- A cross-sectional study design was employed.
- The sample comprised 29 patients with anorexia nervosa, 18 individuals in recovery from anorexia nervosa, and 67 age-matched healthy female control subjects.
- Participants were recruited from six Israeli hospitals, and the translated EDI-2 was administered.
Main Results:
- The translated EDI-2 demonstrated good reliability and validity in the Israeli sample.
- Anorectic patients exhibited significantly higher scores on most EDI-2 scales compared to recovering anorectic individuals.
- Recovering anorectics showed similar scores to control subjects on most scales, with the exception of Perfectionism, where they scored higher.
Conclusions:
- The Hebrew version of the EDI-2 is a reliable and valid instrument for use with Israeli populations.
- The findings support the use of the EDI-2 in clinical settings for assessing eating disorders in Israel.
- The elevated Perfectionism scores in recovering anorectics suggest its continued relevance as a transdiagnostic factor in eating disorder recovery.

Study Designs in Epidemiology
Observational studies are those where the researcher does not intervene but rather observes natural variations. They include cross-sectional, cohort, and case-control studies.
